A brief history of the Show Society

Lurgan Show 1912-Present

Lurgan & District Horse & Cattle Show Society was formed in 1912 with the first Lurgan Show organised in the same year.

The society was initially called the Lurgan Agricultural and Recreation Association but overtime as the show developed, the name was changed to represent the diverse nature of the event.

Lurgan Show has always been staged within the proximity of the present Lurgan Public Park, with the early shows being held in the ‘Kings Park Field’, situated parallel to the Avenue Road, located at the southern side of Lurgan.

This site however outlived its capacity and this necessitated a more to Lurgan Park.

The original site now home to King’s Park Primary School still fulfils a role for the show with the school building being utilised for the Home Industries Section.

Throughout the years, committee meetings have been held at numerous venues throughout the Lurgan area.

However, with Bleary Young Farmers’ Club deeply involved with the Show in the early 1960’s, Bleary Farmers Hall was the ideal venue for show meetings and thus became the permanent home for the organising committee.

The cattle, sheep, poultry, goat and horse sections have always remained buoyant throughout almost the past century, with a growth in recent years in the horse, sheep and poultry sections.

Some 101 years on from that first show, Lurgan Show is still going strong with over 650 various classes and is recognised as one of the foremost one-day events in the Craigavon Borough Council area and remains an excellent day out for all the family.
