What is a Young Farmers' Club?

It is a body which includes not fewer than 10 young people between the ages of 12 and 25 years and which has been formed with the authority of The Young Farmers’ Clubs of Ulster, and registered and approved by the Executive Committee. A Y.F.C. is strictly non-political, non-sectarian and is open to anyone, no matter of his or her ethnic background, religion or profession. The only qualification for membership is an interest in rural life.

What Takes Place at Club Meetings?

Meetings take the form of many varied topics. Such topics in the recent past have ranged from go-karting, laser shooting, Cant Cook, Wont Cook, Quad Biking, Tours of buildings and factories, 10-Pin Bowling, swimming and talks on rural issues. Numerous competitions are held throughout the year ranging from Ulster Young Farmer, Home Management, Stock Judging, Silage Assessment, Swimming Gala & Arts Festival.

The formative Years!

The YFC club was formed on the 6th February 1930 and firstly meet in a hall at Gibson's Hill between Bleary and Lurgan.

Bleary YFC can proudly say that it was one of the first clubs in Ulster and the first club in Co. Armagh followed by the formation of Collone YFC near Markethill, also in Co. Armagh on 7th February.

As quoted in ‘Ulster’s Country Youth’ by S. Alexander Blair “The meeting in Gibson’s Hill Orange Hall led to the formation of the Bleary Club. Mr Andrew Gilchrist presided and after Mr Kimber had spoken, the decision to start a club was taken unanimously”.

The club would appear to have been dissolved after a number of years.

In 1962, a group of rural youth decided to form a ‘new’ Bleary Club. In the early 1960's, the disused schoolhouse at Ballydougan was offered to the club.

The old school which had been vacated by the education authorities then thus became the permanent home of Bleary Young Farmers’ Club.
