Rural Life in Lurgan

This year’s Lurgan Show will take place this Saturday 7th June. As always, the venue will be Lurgan Public Park.

Lurgan Show is always proud to show off the talents of the local people with their baking, crafts and floral art exhibits with these being on view at King’s Park Primary School accessed via the park. In addition, craft stands will be available in the park selling home made wares while trade stands will also be on show. Machinery and car dealers will be displaying their modern equipment with this complimented by many other trade stands.

At 1pm, the Park will be re-sound to the music of the Salvation Army band as the parade of the Mayor and invited dignitaries make their way into the park.

Bleary Young Farmers’ Club will be on the look out for teams to take part in the ‘Chicken Licken It’s a Knockout’ Challenge on the Cattle Lawn at 3pm, which will be followed closely by the Tractor Handling competition.

Prize money of £75 is available in the ‘Build A Scarecrow’ Competition which is open to community groups, youth groups/ clubs, schools and individuals. Simply bring your life size scarecrow to the show grounds by 9.30am.

In addition, to the above, there will be a variety of exciting and entertaining activities which will include a World War II military display, wood carving,  rural skills and a vintage display. A fishing competition is scheduled for the park lake, while boat rides will also be available.

The Equestrian section is set to soar this year with exhibits and with donkey classes, Horse and Pony classes, carriage driving and show jumping classes and a number of qualifiers in each category, Lurgan can offer something for everyone.

Turning to the Cattle section, a wide range of judges have been appointed and with over 70 classes, exhibitors should be spoilt for choice. The show committee would particularly welcome young handlers to this section of the show. Commentary this year will be by Mr Willie Wilson.

Goat classes this year have reached totally new levels with over fifty goats expected on Saturday in a range of 11 classes. The judge for this section will be Mr Harvey Murray, Belfast.

Five classes will run for the Pig Section with Lurgan being a qualifier for the Rare Breeds Survival Trust Pig Derby in August while the sheep section will again provide a number of qualifiers and welcome judges from many parts of the country.

The ever successful Poultry section which is very popular with all ages, will again provide the amazing variety of poultry.

The Lurgan Show committee are delighted with the support from the community, local businesses, individuals, press, stewards and the volunteers who continue to give generously to ensure all are rewarded for their efforts.
