YFC Activities draw the Crowds!

Bleary Young Farmers’ Club events at Lurgan Show proved to be a success. The event was an opportunity to showcase the activities of this rural youth organisation. Between a mix of fun activities and varied competitions, this year’s activities are some which will be remembered writes Club PRO John Harrison.

The focal point for the club was the static display adjacent to the cattle lawn. The stand hosted a number of competitions alongside a tuck-shop, static working model of a cow and general information on the club.

The competition- ‘Guess the name of a goat’ proved to be a rather challenging guessing game!

Another competition, ‘The Lucky Stick’ also proved to be a bit of fun.

Back for the third year and proving to be an ever growing attraction was the ‘Build A Scarecrow Competition’. The competition was judged by Fiona Cromie and the club would like to pass on their thanks to her for kindly agreeing to judge this competition.

First place went to the Valtra mechanic entered by Kate Troughton while second place went to the Galway Girl which was entered by Crumlin YFC. The club would like to thank every organisation that took part in the competition.

An inter-club Chicken Lickin It’s a Knockout Challenge took place on the Sheep Lawn at around 3pm. Teams from Annaclone and Magherally YFC and Bleary YFC competed side-by-side in a variety of courses.

Each team appointed their own mascot, a team member dressed as a chicken. The competition course consisted of various obstacles such as wheelbarrow races and large sack races with a few eggs also thrown into the game. The conclusion of these activities involved a little water which also allowed members to cool off.

The next event on the timetable of events was the YFC Tractor Handling Competition.

First place in the male competition was awarded to Nigel White (Bleary YFC), William McCracken (Bleary YFC) came in second place. Other competitors were namely David Sleator (Annaclone & Magherally YFC), William White (Bleary YFC), Nigel Lawson (Bleary YFC) & Philip Murdock (Bleary YFC).

First place in the ladies competition was awarded to Susanne Halliday (Bleary YFC) while Nicola Harrison (Bleary YFC) came second.

Bleary YFC would like to take this opportunity foremost to thank Lurgan Show Committee for the use of the facilities, Leanne McShane, Lurgan Park Development Officer for providing bins for the activities and also to Annaclone & Magherally YFC. The club is also indebted to T.H. Troughton Tractors, Poyntzpass for the use of a tractor for the event and sponsorship of prizes.
